After-LIFE plan

Task 5.1 · Work package 5 — Sustainability, Replication, and Exploitation of Project Results

Ensuring the long-term sustainability of restoration actions is a key objective of NewLIFE4BioIslands. This task will develop a comprehensive After-LIFE Conservation Plan to maintain the ecological and social benefits of the project beyond its implementation period and provide a strategic framework for the long-term management of restored habitats.

The main actions include:

  • Long-term habitat management: Continued maintenance, monitoring, and adaptive management of restored ecosystems to preserve restoration outcomes.
  • Sustainable grazing management: Ongoing implementation of grazing management measures in relevant restoration areas to support habitat conservation and ecosystem resilience.
  • Biodiversity monitoring: Continuation of monitoring programmes for pollinators, priority species, and restored habitats using field surveys and remote sensing approaches.
  • Maintenance of restoration infrastructure: Long-term management of water collection, irrigation, and other restoration support systems established during the project.
  • Stakeholder engagement and knowledge transfer: Continued support for citizen science networks, local stakeholder participation, and the availability of technical guidance and restoration resources.

The After-LIFE Conservation Plan will also promote the integration of project results into regional and national conservation and restoration policies, ensuring that restored sites continue to contribute to biodiversity recovery, climate resilience, and long-term ecosystem restoration across Mediterranean and Macaronesian landscapes.

Join our BioBlitz events

A BioBlitz is an intensive biodiversity survey where volunteers work together to identify and record as many insect species as possible within a defined area, assisted by a local entomologist. Leave us your details and we will let you know about upcoming events.
