Restoration success depends on the availability of high-quality native plant material adapted to local ecological conditions. This task ensures a reliable supply of seeds and nursery-grown plants to support restoration actions across all NewLIFE4BioIslands intervention areas while safeguarding the genetic diversity of native species.
Activities include the collection and conservation of native germplasm, seed processing and storage, and the production of native seedlings through a network of partner nurseries and specialised propagation facilities. Seed collection will follow recognised conservation standards to protect wild populations, while nursery production will provide the plant material required for large-scale restoration and species recovery actions.
The task will also strengthen collaboration with seed banks and botanical institutions to ensure the long-term conservation of native genetic resources and support future restoration efforts. By combining ex situ conservation with ecological restoration, these activities will provide the scientific and technical foundation for the reintroduction and reinforcement of native plant populations and improve the resilience of restored Mediterranean and Macaronesian ecosystems.
Citizen science
A BioBlitz is an intensive biodiversity survey where volunteers work together to identify and record as many insect species as possible within a defined area, assisted by a local entomologist. Leave us your details and we will let you know about upcoming events.
